Geek Speak Vol 2. 08

Mon Jun 9, 2008, 1:31 AM
This (or rather, last weeks since I was sick and offline) week's Geek Speak we have: Secret Invasion #3, Trinity #1 and Invincible TP vol 9. and something worth mentioning that's not a comic but worth a mention just cos of the awesomness of it.

Secret Invasion #3
Okay I can't say much here cos I don't wanna give away any spoilers but if anything, the story's intruiging enough to keep me wondering what's gonna happen next. Though there's at least one thing I didn't agree with in this issue cos I think it'd just be a huge cop out, but I'll stick around to see how it plays out. Issue 2 was cool cos Clint Barton finally started acting like the Hawkeye I know again. So lets see how the invasion goes. It's kinda like reading an episode of Battlestar Galactica, but with spandex.

Trinity #1
Seeing the big 3 of DC hanging out and acting like friends was definitely one of the coolest moments. For a change Bruce wayne ain't being his paranoid, angry self like he's been written before. Which, truth be told, turned me away from most of the Bat-titles. Now I don't wanna piss of all the Batman fans out there cos I am one too, but at some point Batman was written like an ass for awhile and his paranoia made him even treat his most trusted friends like crap, and it didn't really gel that well with me. But it seems like DC are making an effort to bring him back from the brink, which I've noticed in the latest Justice League and now in Trinity which is great!
The story's just gotten started so can't say much for the series yet, but Bagley's a legend and his art really kicks New God ass in this! So on general priniciple you should pick it up for that. And wait till you see Mark Bagley's Flash. Check this new series out now.

Invincible TPB Vol 9
Finally finally finally it came in and I picked it up without hesitation. Such a great series with cool characters and great ongoing plot. Great action and off the wall artwork which is so clean you could eat off it. If you want a taste of it, check out :iconwya: 's gallery. If you haven't read Invincible ... then you're should be ashamed of yourself.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
I can't say much about this movie cos I don't wanna spoil anything but as an Indiana Jones fan, I totally loved it. Watching it brought back all those feeling a had when I watched the originals and though some people said it was a bit long, I felt like it was a rollercoaster ride of adventure that I didn't want to stop, just to see where the next clue would lead and what traps and threats would show up to slow down the veteran bullwhip wielding hero. Tons of fun in a kickass fedora. Before I wanted to be a superhero, I wanted to be Indiana Jones, part of me still does.

that's pretty sweet. Glad Trinity's turning out well! Maybe I'll start grabbing the series ... time and funds will tell.

I think Trinity will take a while before the story really starts to pick up speed as Bagley and co only do like half the book. So if you give it a couple weeks it should be cool.

That makes sense. I'm still leery after Countdown.

Understandable. Countdown and 52 were not my cup o tea.

I enjoyed 52, but still can't read it a second time through. It worked well enough, but I had hoped they'd fill in the year-long gaps better. Countdown didn't do it for me at all. Heh.

I'll definitely be looking up trinity when I get back home, though!

My main issues with 52 and Countdown is that it felt like it's all just there for the money cos at the end of both series, neither had any real significant effects on the rest of the DCU that you'd even notice in any other series. So instead of getting that I'd rather get 52 issues of something good and worthwhile. These weekly comic things just make me feel like it's all about the money and leave me disappointed.

That's very true. Both just feel tacked on to the DCU, rather than integrated with it. At the same time, though, if they make the weekly too integrated into the universe those of us w/o the means to grab the titles feel left out. It's a very fine line they have to walk.

I just think they should do without the weekly comics and just keep with what they had going on before it happened. Where you could pick up a comic of your favourite character and see what they're up to, without having to get 20 titles that month to know. A crossover event once in awhile is cool but it's getting a bit much these days.

I'm feeling secret invasion, and the art style is refreshing... the sory is also going really well, loving it all... I agree with you on the cop out, but this is marvel. How long would they let "what happened" "carry on for"?

I gave trinity a look because you mentioned it, and iFanboy previewed it, and it looked interesting, however, I gotta disagree with you on Bagley's art. The art was sub standard at best, and just plain lazy at worst. I dunno, it coulda been the inker, but the me, the art was phoned in.

I'm still hoping they don't cop out on this.

I dunno hey, to me the Bagley pages totally reminded me of the early Ultimate Spiderman issues. I do however still think that he's still trying to get a feel for these characters but looking forward to what he's gonna do with them in the future. Either way, he does a kick ass Flash!
